Come experience the roaring canons, cavalry, and cries for victory during Saturday’s and Sunday’s battles. A Ladies Tea and Fashion show will be exhibiting some of the latest dresses from that era. Presidents Abraham Lincoln and William McKinley will be speaking about their lives and terms in office. Children will be able to partake in the demonstration of games that children would have played. Take a living history tour through the Union and Confederate camps as guides explain the different items that were used and how soldiers would survive such conditions. Saturday evening the public are invited back to help us at the Camp Dance as we plan to break the Guinness Book of World Records for the most couples participating in the Virginia Reel.

Garfield, an encampment will be held at the site in Mentor, OH, July 31 through August 1, 2010. In addition to honoring General Garfield, the event will serve as prelude to the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. Though primarily remembered as the 20th President of the United States, General Garfield served in the Union army for two years. He entered as a Lieutenant Colonel, received a promotion to Brigadier General, then left the army as a Major General. He served at the battles of Middle Creek, Shiloh, Corinth and Chickamauga. Garfield is noted for his ride through enemy fire to reach General George H. Thomas at the second day of bloody fighting at Chickamauga.

The encampment will have regiments from both the Union and Confederate armies, including the 7th and 8th Ohio, 5th Texas, 1st Louisiana, and 1st Kentucky CSA. The 5th United States Colored Infantry will be providing living history demonstrations both days. Other activities will include a firing and drill demonstration, bayonet drill, children’s marching and drills, children’s scavenger hunt, Ladies Aid Society presentation and a speech by “James A. Garfield.” President Lincoln and Mrs. Garfield will be on hand to welcome visitors throughout each day.

Food will be available and several sutlers will be set up to demonstrate and sell items that pertain to the Civil War period. The encampment hours are 10-5 on Saturday and 11-5 on Sunday. Admission to the encampment and all related activities is free. Parking is on site.

In the past few weeks we have received many requests from organizations around the state interested in finding reenactors and reenactment units for their Civil War events. To make it easier for communities to plan their commemoration events, we’ve created a forum to help connect hosting organizations with reenactors.

If you would like to be on the list of reenactors available for Civil War commemoration events, please use our forum to post a description of the character(s) you can portray or your reenactment unit along with your contact information (we recommend including just your e-mail address or website link).
