My position is an Ohio Historic Inventory Surveyor team member at the Cleveland Landmarks Commission, and I am serving my second year with AmeriCorps. Last year I was able to survey the neighborhood of Glenville and Tremont. I worked with local community groups and students to promote preservation awareness and education. This year, I am focusing on surveying historic resources from the recent past, and I am also continuing my outreach efforts. Contact me if you would like further information about the historic designation process, or if you would like to schedule a discussion session for your group.

As a native resident of Columbus, I am excited to serve with the Preservation Corps for the Columbus Landmarks Foundation. Columbus has an interesting and varied built environment that can reveal a lot about city residents. Using the Ohio Historic Inventory Form I will be documenting some of Columbus’s great buildings and the people associated with them. I will be focusing on one of the most successful but unappreciated periods in Columbus history: newly-historic modern buildings from the mid 20th century.

As a member of the Preservation Corps and also an out-of-towner, I am extremely excited to have an opportunity to explore Ohio’s rich history. My host site, Ohio Historical Society, has given me the opportunity to inventory a number of their sites and with this experience I hope to become skilled at completing an OHI form! During the next year, I ultimately hope to increase historical preservation awareness through my work with various preservation organizations, increase my own knowledge of architectural building types, and work to help build a sense of community through service.

As a member of the Preservation Corps, I will be working with my host organization, the Ohio Historical Society, to complete historic building surveys and update maintenance records for OHS sites. Throughout my year with AmeriCorps I will travel throughout the eastern region of Ohio to meet and interact with the local groups that manage these sites, something I am very excited about. By working with these groups, I hope to foster a continued dialogue on why the preservation of these sites, and the communities that surround them, is important.

As a returning member of the Preservation Corps, I hope to continue to provide the support and resources communities need to save the places that matter. Building open the work we started last year, I hope to continue to show historic preservation is both a path to honoring the rich heritage of a community, as well as a means to developing a sustainable future through economic development and revitalization.

I look forward to getting to know the communities I will be visiting and to assist in protecting Ohio’s cultural resources.

I am very excited to be part of the ongoing collaboration between AmeriCorps, Preservation Ohio and Downtown Mansfield Inc. I hope to aide all three of these organizations in their continued quest for community revitalization, preservation and economic stimulation. I have always had a passion for history and architecture and am finally at a point in my life, where I can turn these obsessions into a profession! More importantly, I look forward to reaching out to individuals in this community and promote the importance of economic revitalization and the preservation of our past. My thinking – How can we move forward if we don’t remember and honor the past?

As a member of the Preservation Corps, I am excited to be working with my host organization, Downtown Mansfield, Inc. Together, we will be working to promote historic preservation and community revitalization through the Operation Uplift program in the St. Peter’s and Westinghouse Districts in the near downtown Mansfield area. Throughout my tenure in AmeriCorps I hope to promote historic preservation as a means for community and economic development. I also hope to help citizens build community by taking pride and becoming accountable for their neighborhoods.
