There was also a dedication of the GAR Buell Post monument. The event took place at the Oak Grove Cemetery in Marietta.

These photos are from the “Washington County CW Soldiers Monument Dedication” at Rockland Cemetery in Belpre. The monument commemorates the 4500 Washington County soldiers who served in the CW and the more than 150 who are buried at Rockland Cemetery. Speakers included Dan Hinton of the SUVCW Benjamin Fearing Camp #2 (Marietta), Charles Reeves Commander of the Ohio Dept. SUVCW, the Mayor of Belpre and one of the city planners.

Last Civil War Veterans of Jackson County Event

This event, sponsored by the Jackson County Historical Society on Memorial Day weekend 2011, honored the last the last Confederate and Union Veterans from Jackson County Ohio. The photographs show the placement of wreaths at the graves of Barak Chase, the last Union veteran (who is buried at Evergreen Cemetery), and Abrose Workman, the last Confederate veteran (buried at Ridgewood Cemetery). The event featured Bob Ervin, who portrayed Abraham Lincoln. At each grave, Lewis placed a wreath and gave a short speech (most of which was taken from the Gettysburg address), which honored the individual soldier and all those who served.

Athens Ohio: Call to Arms

Civil War Commemoration/ Reenactment

The Call to Arms took place on April 23rd at the Athens Courthouse steps. This event provided a brief glimpse into life in Athens at the start of the Civil War. The event included the reading of Lincoln’s Proclamations by ‘Norman Root’, the Mayor of Athens in 1861. ‘Joseph Dana’, a prominent local lawyer of the day was present to sign up young men for 90 days of service with the Union Army. Any young men who wished to serve the cause of the Union was examined by a doctor and signed their volunteer enlistment papers.

John Hunt Morgan

Morgan, John Hunt,--1825-1864--Military service.

Head-and-shoulders portrait shows General John Hunt Morgan of the Confederate Army around the time of his death in 1864, executed well after the American Civil War. A similar portrait was published in Harper's Weekly in 1864 announcing Morgan's death. The drawing is on wove paper, with ink brush over graphite under-drawing.
In July 1863 Confederate Brigadier General John Hunt Morgan lead approximately 1,400 calvarymen on a 13 day raid through southern and eastern Ohio. At the Battle of Buffington Island, 750 men were captured and 300 escaped across the Ohio River. Morgan and 400 men headed north after the battle and were captured in Columbiana County, Ohio.
