Johnson's Island Prison Sutler's Tickets

The Union Army contracted with sutlers to sell goods such as stationery, toothbrushes, and combs to the prisoners at Johnson's Island Prison to supplement their often-meager rations. Prisoners were issued tickets as scrip to be used for transactions. Several sutlers did business at the prison during the course of the war. These tickets were issued for business with John R. Terry, sutler ("J.R.T.").
Johnson's Island, the site of a Civil War prison camp, is located in Sandusky Bay. Lieutenant Colonel William Hoffman leased the island from Leonard B. Johnson in 1861 for use as a prison camp for Confederate prisoners. Due to the abundant natural resources on the island, the conditions were not as harsh as those in many Southern prison camps. However, prisoners did suffer from disease, poor nutrition, and exposure to harsh Lake Erie winters. Created to hold Confederate officers, the prison housed about 3, 000 prisoners by the end of the war.

Johnson's Island Prison Ladder

There were several recorded escape attempts at Johnson's Island Prison. This ladder, constructed primarily of scrap wood and rope made from cloth, is believed to have been used during one escape attempt. It is approximately eight feet long. The ladder was donated to the Sandusky Library/ Follett House Museum in 1903 by Mrs. Leonard Johnson, daughter-in-law of Leonard B. Johnson, who leased the island to the federal government during the Civil War.

Johnson's Island Hoffman's Battalion

This photograph depicts Hoffman's Battalion, the volunteer unit assigned to guard the Confederate prisoners at Johnson's Island. Hoffman's Battalion guarded the island from the Spring of 1832 until January 1864. At that time six more companies were added and the group became the 128th O.V.I. The 128th stood guard until July 10, 1865, when the prison closed. Johnson's Island, the site of a Civil War prison camp, is located in Sandusky Bay. Lt. Col. William Hoffman leased the island from Leonard B. Johnson in 1861 for use as a prison camp for Confederate prisoners.
