Early in 2010, another of Ohio's regiments will have their story told in print. The Buckeye Vanguard: 49th Ohio Volunteer Infantry is to be published by Little Miami Press. The book chronicles the 49th from its recruitment in Seneca, Hancock, Putnam and surrounding Counties through four years of military service, conlcuding with regiment's reunions that ocurred into the 20th century. With 106 many never-before published photographs, a roster detailing the disposition of each soldier as well as poems songs and other writings from the men of the 49th, this promises to be a great reference for Civil War enthusiasts, a treasure for descendents and a good example of Ohio's contributions to the Civil War effort.

Anxiously awaiting this!!! And for those of you who don't know, there was never a regimental history written after the war. This will be very unique text because of this and will be the first formal history of the 49th OVI to take print. The 49th was also one of only two Ohio infantry regiments to sustain more combat casulties than from illness and disease.

That's wonderful! Books like that are a godsend to other people interested in the regiment. I also find the degree of respect it takes to honor the men in that regiment like this to be quite touching. They deserve it. Thank you, Mark. I will be looking forward to reading this.

The Buckeye Vanguard: The 49th Ohio Volunteer Infantry (Little Miami Press) was released last week, one year to the day that we lost a dear friend and my partner in the book, Dick Mann. While bittersweet, we are excited to see the story of the 49th avaialble to all. All proceeds will be used for a historical marker in Tiffin where the regiment mustered in. It is our hope to dedicate the marker next September close to the date when the 49th boarded the train to head South and to the war.
