Categories of Information in Civil War Genealogy Research
Excerpt from Mary 27, 2008 Ohio Civil War Genealogy Journal. For more information, please visit http://www.ogs.org/ or email ocwgj@ogs.org.
For either Military Service or War-related Civilian Service, five basic categories of genealogical information are needed about each person:
- Lived (before the war, up until period of military or civilian service)
- Served (what unit(s) or capacity, & when)
- Lived (if he or she survived military or civilian service, perhaps multiple locations)
- Died (when, cause, where)
- Buried (where & whether marked)
