Hi Elizabeth,

I'm trying to find scholars who can speak and/or write about Northern women's involvement in the CW. Especially anything to do with women disguising themselves as men to fight on the battlefield, women as nurses on the battlefields, women's lives on the home front, female abolitionists from Ohio, etc.

I'm Mary Katherine Arensberg and my novel Willa, is a Civil War drama set in Columbus, Ohio. In 2008 Willa won second place in National Federation Of Press Women's Communicator's Competetion. I also wrote an article on the Battle of Picacho Pass, Arizona that was Published in Blue and Gray MAgazine in 2008. The story of Willa is from 1859-1865, set near the former site of Camp Chase and is told from a woman's point of view. The saga sweeps across the country, Chicago to train as a battle field nurse with Mary Ann Bickerdyke, to Sherman's March to Sea to Gettysburg and Lincoln's famous address to the battlefields of the eastern theater. I am a speaker. I have spokken at historical societies, schools, service clubs and given TV and radio interviews. My email is marykatherinearensberg@woway.com.

I have a couple of presentations about women during the war years; one is on Ohio women's occupations from the 1860 census. I can pull one together quickly on Ladies Soldiers Aid societies, of Greene County in particular. Let me know what you need.

Currently, I have three presentations/exhibits regarding women's roles in society and in the Civil War: "Heroines of the Hearth" contains artifacts reflecting female participation in the War effort from home and in the field – however, this does not touch on female soldiers; "Horizontal Refreshments" speaks of the sex trade during the Civil War; "Civil War Artifacts of the Gentler Sex" displays personal everyday items as well as artifacts of war that had a direct impact on female civilians.
I am a regular contributor to "The Citizen's Companion" – a magazine devoted to the civilian aspect of the Civil War and the authoress of "What's a Poor Girl to do? Prostitution in Mid-Nineteenth Century America." My collection and research focuses on the social history of the Civil War years and the "Underworld" of the Victorians and my lecture topics reflect these aspects of my studies. I have shared my expertise and artifacts for use in several programs on The History Channel and A&E as well as the Museum of Sex in NYC, the William P. Didusch Center for Urologic History in Maryland, and the Dittrick Medical History Center in Cleveland, Ohio. Please let me know if any of these topics are of interest to you.

Dear Ms. Wilson,

I am truly sorry that I did not get back to you in a timely manner. I encourage you to contact Frank Dunkle at the Ohio Humanities Council at Frank@ohiohumanities.org. He is managing the CW150 Speakers Corps. There are certain requirements to be included in the Speakers Corps so please send a resume to Frank if you are interested in being a speaker. If you are not interested in being on our Speakers Corps, please consider being a guest author on our website and/or allow me to pass along your contact information to organizations interested in a presentation about women in the Civil War.

Kind regards,

Kristina

Hello Ms. Topping,

Thank you for your interest! Your presentations sound very exciting! If you are interested in joining our Speakers Corps, I encourage you to send your resume to Frank Dunkle at the Ohio Humanities Council at Frank@ohiohumanities.org. You can contact me at kkuehling@ohiohistory.org.

Thank you,

Kristina,
Shouldn't Women's Roles in the Civil War be its own topic and not a sub-topic of the Underground Railroad?

Hi Elizabeth,

Are you commenting on the forum title? This forum, "Ohio Civil War and Underground Railroad Speakers," is for speakers of all Civil War-era topics (including the Underground Railroad). Women's roles fall within both "Ohio in the Civil War" and "Underground Railroad" since they participated in both the war and the abolitionist movement.

We have several women in the National Society of Living Historians who focus on women and their roles (military, homefront and medical) during the Civil War.   We enjoy going to schools and civic groups to educate and share our love of history.   Please let us know if we can be of any service.

Sincerely,

Abigail Wayfield

I would  recommend  that you contact the Lucy Hayes Heritage Center (www.lucyhayes.org).   They have some great people there who are very well versed in her life.   She spent quite a bit of time traveling with the army when Rutherford was a general, and was very popular with the troops.   She visited the wounded, helped nurses, etc.

Kristen,

I would be able to present an overview of several female abolitionists from Ohio and also the pivotal role of Abbey Foster Kelley from New England and a Garrisonian, who spent more than a year of her life in Salem Ohio, near Lisbon, working very hard to build the early antebellum american western abolitionist society from there… and who for the rest of the era, worked hard to both fund and keep the Salem based WAS abolitionist movement alive and well…ang healthy well past 1840…

….i think her role as a special female abolitionists and one of the most prominent and first high profile, radical abolitionists females, who in the end, is the very persona and cause of the famous split of the American Abolitionist Society led by the support of Garrison for her key and high profile role, in the entire national movement, to the chagrin of many a church minister of her time, is critical to understanding not only Ohio's abolitionist movement, but also the entire role of women during the era and the start of the women's movement in the U.S. in general..

…I have a civil rights law as a solo lawyer background have studied American history with Professor and Dean Emeritus Fred Blue of Youngstown State and have spoken on relaetd topices before schools and colleges and publci forums as a speaker the rise of abolitionist theories for human freedom…

i would love to be able to present for the OHS on this subject of female aboliitionists in Ohio…truly…

my contact infor is on my email and my number is 740 381 5935

i am the director of what is called the Midwest Center for Constitutional Rights

and an executive board member of the Steubenville Branch of the NAACP and a special advisor to the Executive Director of the State NAACP on legal and constitutional affairs

Hi Richard,

Thank you for the information! OHS does not have specific events planned in which we would need a speaker right now but I posted the request because organizations around the state were/are interested in finding a speaker on this topic. We will be sure to continue to direct organizations to our forum in order to find speakers for their upcoming events.

Kind regards,

Kristina
