Join the Wayne County Civil War Roundtable for their October program. Harold George of Lakewood, Ohio, a well-known Civil War historian, author, and lecturer, will appear in his Civil War era military uniform and speak on “The Medal of Honor ~ the Good ~ the Bad ~ the Ugly.” In 1863, the nation’s first Medal of Honor was awarded. Since then, more than 3,400 have been issued for acts of bravery and heroism “above and beyond the call of duty.” In a few instances, however, the medal was awarded for rather unique, strange, and less than glorious reasons. Hear the true story of the “civilian” who was awarded this military award, a Navy officer awarded the medal during “peacetime,” an Army officer who committed a military blunder and was awarded the medal 30 years later, and more.
