Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War representatives and community leaders will dedicate Greene County’s new memorial honoring soldiers and sailors of the 1861-65 American Civil War Sunday, May 30 at 11 a.m. The free and open to the public ceremony takes place outside the Greene County Courthouse, East Market and Greene Streets, Xenia, Ohio.
U.S. Congressman Steve Austria, local officials, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW) Department of Ohio Commander Robert W. Davis, and Brigadier General Robert E. Grim, national commander of the Sons of Veterans Reserve will be among participating dignitaries. As part of the event, Fred Lynch, commander of SUVCW Sherman Camp #93 will read Grand Army of the Republic General Order Number 11 – – the 1868 document establishing May 30th as the national day to honor Civil War veterans who died in defense of the United States 1861-65.
Other honors planned during the event include presentation of the colors by the SUVCW William T. Sherman Camp #93 Color Guard and an artillery salute by re-enactors belonging to the 10th Ohio Battery. The original Tenth Ohio Independent Light Artillery Battery formed in Xenia in 1862. The SUVCW is a patriotic and educational organization. Members are descendants of soldiers who fought in the War of the Rebellion. The group is the legal heir to the Grand Army of the Republic.
The monument and ceremony are sponsored by the Greene County Civil War Discussion Group and William T. Sherman Camp #93, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War. Local citizens, civic groups, and the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War donated funds to pay for the memorial.
